In the NY Giants preseason opener, we saw New York come out on top 14-3 en route to a victory against the Lions. Despite this exciting win, there are a few players who are at risk of being released ahead of the Aug. 27 roster cut deadline.
These three guys may not have necessarily performed poorly, however, they either didn't show enough, or had factors outside of their control that could, unfortunately, cause them to lose a roster spot that they may have earned otherwise.
LB Dyontae Johnson
This one may come as a shock, as Dyontae Johnson has been one of the biggest storylines throughout the Giants' offseason. The UDFA out of Toledo has been showing out more than most on defense, even earning some first-team reps. Even in the preseason opener, Johnson performed incredibly well.
So, with all this in mind, what makes us think Johnson could get cut? Well, unfortunately, Johnson was another casualty of the ongoing injury bug. While at first, it didn't seem too severe, Johnson was seen with a boot at practice this week, so he could miss extended time.
This preseason was Johnson's chance to prove that his skills were legit, as despite what he's done in training camp, he still had a lot to show in order to earn a roster spot. There are a lot of guarantees in the Giants' linebacker room, and unfortunately, Johnson doesn't have one.
Bobby Okereke, Micah McFadden, Isaiah Simmons, Darius Muasau, and Carter Coughlin all have seemingly locked in a roster spot due to their experience and in the case of Muasau, he was just drafted. Hopefully, Johnson can return to the field sooner rather than later because he has a chance to be a real contributor to the defense, he just has to stay healthy to do so.
