Coming off a season where the New York Giants finished 6-11 and missed the playoffs for the sixth time in the last seven years, it was important for them to look sharp in their preseason opener against the Detroit Lions. Despite the rainy conditions at MetLife Stadium, the Giants looked good for the most part, as they posted a 14-3 win.

Despite not many of the starters playing for the Giants last week, there were still some bright spots to look at and get excited about as the start of the regular season is sneaking up on us. From seeing their first-round pick out on the field, their second-year running back looking impressive and also the defense playing looking sharp, there were some solid takeaways for Brian Daboll.

It was certainly a step in the right direction for Big Blue as they get ready for their next preseason game against the Houston Texans. While the Giants looked strong, let's pump the brakes on some overreactions being made:

4. The Giants running backs room will be fine without Saquon Barkley

Giants fans felt sick to their stomach when Pro Bowl running back and former No. 2 overall pick Saquon Barkley left New York for the Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants however did find Barkley's replacement by signing Devin Singletary, who has proven to be a solid running back during his career with the Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans. He didn't play vs. Detroit, but that didn't stop the RBs from looking strong.

Running back Eric Gray did not play much during the regular season a year ago, but did however have a great start to this preseason. Gray rushed for 52 yards on four carries with two touchdowns - one of them being a 48-yard run. He also caught four passes out of the backfield for 46 yards. Gray was certainly impressive, but it was still just a small sample size.

While Gray may have provided some assurance for the Giants at the running back position from his promising preseason game, it's still a questionable running backs room for Big Blue. Singletary has yet to crack 1,000 yards on the ground in his five years in the NFL, and Gray only had 48 yards on the ground last season on 17 carries. Tyrone Tracy Jr. is injured, while Dante 'Turbo' Miller signed as a UDFA. NY just signed Joshua Kelley too. With that said, it's still up in the air how life without Saquon is going to be.
