4 dark horses to make the NY Giants 53-man roster
With the NY Giants' training camp right around the corner, we're going to be getting our best look at the team's roster ahead of the preseason and what it could eventually look like following cut day. Some guys are practically guaranteed roster spots due to their skills and contracts. However, others have to fight a bit more in order to earn their keep.
These four players are a little more unknown to the casual Giants fan, yet could make a very strong push to make the roster. Not only are they in positions of need, but if they can outperform their expectations during camp, we could see them remain with the team for the foreseeable future.
4. S Gervarrius Owens
With the signing of Jalen Mills and Elijah Riley this offseason, Gervarrius Owens went from potentially being the third safety, to the fifth. Don't count him out just yet, though, as the second-year safety could still be a part of the Giants' defense in 2024.
While he barely saw the field during his rookie campaign, Owens shined during the preseason. Through the three games he appeared in, Owens racked up 14 combined tackles, not missing a single one, while also allowing one reception on four targets for eight yards, breaking up two passes in the process.
If retained, Owens may not see a ton of snaps in the regular season. However, he could provide some nice injury insurance if the Giants secondary sees some losses. If he has yet another strong preseason, it will be hard to not want Owens around. At the very least, he seems like a lock to return to the practice squad if Joe Schoen opts to let the 24-year-old go.
