Over the past few weeks, a lot of people have been talking about how difficult life is going to be without Saquon Barkley in town with the NY Giants. Hard Knocks showed us exactly how things went down with him in free agency.
Are the Giants going to miss Barkley on offense? Sure, he has been their most explosive player. However, general manager Joe Schoen continues to say this team is going to be just fine. At the same time, he also has a ton of belief in new RB Devin Singletary.
While speaking with Peter Schrager, Schoen doubled down on the confidence he has in the veteran back. Yup, Schoen and the front office know Singletary will be able to deliver whenever his number is called by Brian Daboll this fall and winter:
Joe Schoen is a believer in new NY Giants RB Devin Singletary
As soon as he lost Barkley, Schoen didn't waste time in finalizing a new deal with Singletary. The former Bills and Texans RB put the pen to paper on a three-year, $16.5 million contract with the Giants to be the squad's new lead rusher.
While the 5-7, 203-pounder doesn't have any Pro Bowl honors to his name, he has proven to be a quality RB over the past five seasons. In the past three years, Singletary has posted more than 800 years per campaign, highlighted by a career-high 898 in 2023.
He has also shown quality hands in the passing game, hauling in 175 receptions for 1,174 yards since making his league debut. Yes, plenty of people will argue that Barkley is the much better player, but one thing Singletary has in his favor over the new Eagles playmaker is that he has been quite durable.
Singletary appeared in every game in 2023, with 10 starts. The year before, he started 16 games for the Bills, while also starting 16 more contests the year before. Barkley as we all know has battled injuries following his incredible rookie season with the G-Men.
We're not saying Singletary is going to come in and match Barkley's electric play in East Rutherford, but we are confident that he'll be able to handle the workload and be a pleasant surprise for this offense. Schoen appears to be a big fan of his game and for good reason.
