With all the madness that surrounded defensive coordinator Wink Martindale this offseason, it's easy to forget that NY Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka was almost out the door too. He had multiple interviews to make the leap to become a head coach, but nothing hit for him.

With that, Kafka is set to be back for his third campaign with New York, hoping that things go a bit smoother for him in 2024. Last season, Brian Daboll removed play-calling duties from his OC multiple times. Now, it's up in the air who will be calling plays in 2024, as Daboll said at the Annual League Meeting that things are still being figured out for Big Blue. Yeah, Kafka can't be happy about this.

Brian Daboll has left the door open for him to call plays this upcoming season

With Daboll 'certainly' missing calling plays and there being pressure on him to deliver for NY next season, this could lead to him running the show for the offense in '24. This is a responsibility that Kafka clearly wants.

What might make him even more upset if Daboll calls plays is that the G-Men blocked the Seahawks request to interview Kafka to be their new offensive coordinator earlier this winter. Seattle didn't hire Kafka as head coach, but they wanted to see if he'd be a good fit working with Mike Macdonald.

However, Daboll and Joe Schoen put their foot down and decided they weren't going to let Kafka leave East Rutherford for a lateral move. That's all fine and dandy, but Kafka can't be too thrilled knowing that his job duties are quite unknown as we inch closer to camp.

Before you know it, the summer will be here and the Giants' preparations for the new season will start getting serious. It's been reported that Kafka's relationship with Coach Dabes is a bit fractured, but Daboll removing play-calling duties off his plate isn't going to improve things at all.

Daboll knows the Giants have to bounce back in '24 and if that means making Kafka a bit upset, then he might have to do what he thinks is best for this team. Either way, it's a tough spot for both Daboll and Kafka to be in.
