Daniel Jones among NY Giants worries on offense with the Vikings up next
Now that the 53-man roster is set for the NY Giants, although some changes could be on the way, it's time for Brian Daboll to take his planning for Week 1 into overdrive. The G-Men are set to host the Minnesota Vikings, but they'll enter that matchup as small underdogs despite being the home side.
There are some worries for the fanbase on both sides of the ball, but in this article, we're focusing on Coach Dabes' offense. After what we saw last season, it's understandable to have some anxiety, especially with these four aspects a bit up in the air:
How will Daniel Jones look against the Minnesota secondary?
All eyes are going to be on Daniel Jones in this one. Quite frankly, there are no excuses for the sixth-year quarterback. The Giants improved the offensive line, Malik Nabers is in town and Danny Dimes looks to be fully recovered from his torn ACL. There are some nerves after his two-interception showing vs. the Texans, but now is the time for Jones to silence his haters and ball out. If he struggles, the screams for him to hit the bench for good are only going to get louder.
Will the offensive line be able to deliver for Brian Daboll?
There's a new-look offensive line in town, which is a blessing after the group up front gave up 85 sacks in 2023. Not only that, but Bobby Johnson is gone and Carmen Bricillo is the new position coach. Barring any last-minute changes, the starting unit will be, from left to right, Andrew Thomas, Jon Runyan Jr., John Michael Schmitz (ankle), Greg Van Roten and Jermaine Eluemunor. The pieces are put in place for better things to happen in the trenches. We're just keeping our fingers crossed that these guys can step up and live up to expectations.
Life without Saquon Barkley is going to take center stage
Now that Saquon Barkley is with the Eagles, a new running back chapter is here for the G-Men. Against the Vikings, Devin Singletary will get the start, but we expect to see plenty of Eric Gray. In the preseason Week 2 loss to Houston, Singletary posted 20 yards on 10 carries - that's not going to cut it. Gray was strong vs. the Lions, posting two scores, with one of them coming on an unreal run. Neither is a superstar, but the hope is the ground game will be just fine without Saquon. Come Sept. 8, we'll find out just how much this team will end up missing him, or if they'll be just fine.
Malik Nabers needs to make a statement vs. the Vikings
All offseason, we've heard about how electric Nabers is going to be for Big Blue. He's been dubbed the savior for the offense, providing the Giants with a stud WR1. As great as he looked in joint practices and camp, none of that matters now. That's because Nabers has to perform the way everyone is hoping him to in the regular season.
This kid has all the potential in the world, no one is going to deny that. He showed flashes of brilliance vs. the Texans, which came after he didn't post a single target in his preseason debut. Against the Vikings, fans would love nothing more than to see a breakout game posted. If he has a quiet day or has untimely drops, it will lead to plenty of people going after him. We sure hope that won't be the case.
