We've almost lost track of how many veteran cornerbacks the NY Giants have missed out on this offseason. The main ones that stand out, however, include Darious Williams, Tre'Davious White and Stephon Gilmore. Throughout the summer, it has been made clear that the G-Men need help and that someone is needed to push for the CB2 job.

There aren't a ton of names left out there in free agency, but could Ahkello Witherspoon make sense for Brian Daboll and new defensive coordinator Shane Bowen? The team over at Bleacher Report seems to think so, as they've listed him as a player the G-Men need to 'add now' with the preseason wrapped up.

Veteran CB Ahkello Witherspoon would make plenty of sense for the NY Giants

"The Giants are very young at cornerback heading into the regular season, with Cor'Dale Flott (third season), Deonte Banks (second season) and Dru Phillips (rookie) listed as the starters on the team's depth chart. So, it'd be smart to add someone like Witherspoon who has 57 career starts. Plus, it doesn't hurt that the seven-year pro is coming off a career-high 14 passes defended in 2023."

Bleacher Report

The 6-2, 195-pounder is getting ready for his eighth season in the NFL. He spent the first four years of his career with the 49ers, followed by two years with the Steelers. In 2023, he suited up for the Los Angeles Rams, posting 52 total tackles, 14 pass deflections and three interceptions in 17 starts.

Witherspoon was able to play at a high level last fall and winter and he would certainly provide the Giants and Daboll with an upgrade at the position over some of the guys currently in town. Deonte Banks is your CB1, there's no doubt about that. However, no one has emerged as a stud in the CB2 battle.

Cor'Dale Flott is still working his way back from a quad injury, while Nick McCloud and Tre Hawkins have been underwhelming throughout camp and the preseason. Plenty of people are nervous about how the secondary is going to hold up early on in the season, as experience is lacking. Witherspoon could be the kind of playmaker to help out in a big way. If he's not asking for too much dough, this is a move we'd love to see Schoen make. Bringing in someone of Witherspoon's caliber is long overdue.
