Daniel Jones will cost Brian Daboll his Giants job if he's not benched

It was another Week 1 game to forget for the New York Giants. With the hope that Big Blue could rebound from their disappointing 2023 season, the Minnesota Vikings cruised past the Giants at MetLife Stadium, winning 28-6 with plenty of boobirds heard. Everything that could have gone wrong for this team did.

This loss also marks the second year in a row that the G-Men failed to score a touchdown in their season opener after getting embarrassed by the Dallas Cowboys last season in Week 1, 40-0. Daniel Jones was also not sharp, to say the least, for the Giants and Brian Daboll has to think about benching Jones. Too dramatic? We don't think so. Jones continues to prove he's not the answer.

Daniel Jones has proven he's not the long-term answer for the NY Giants

From the beginning of this one, you could tell right away that the former first-round pick was not on his game, and it showed. Jones had just 186 yards passing on 22 completions and threw two interceptions, with one of them returned for a touchdown by Vikings linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel. Another pick-six for Jones? Yup.

Last season, New York went 6-11 and missed out on the playoffs. The G-Men of course weren't going to let Daboll go, but what happens if NY goes 4-13 or 6-11 again? Is John Mara going to have a ton of patience with his head coach? Keep in mind that Bill Belichick could be waiting for an opening. The Giants' schedule does not get easier moving forward, as they have to travel the next two weeks to take on the Washington Commanders and Cleveland Browns, followed by a Thursday Night matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.

Whether it's Drew Lock or Tommy DeVito, Daboll has to think about what's best for his team and really ask himself if Jones is the best guy going forward for the Giants this season. After this disastrous start to the 2024 campaign, it feels like it could be another long year for NY.

Daboll can't accept garbage play from his QB. If he sticks with Jones from start to finish in '24, plenty of people are going to be calling for him to be gone by the time next offseason arrives. He needs to make a tough call here.
