2 teams tried trading for TE Darren Waller before the Giants
One of the biggest offseason moves NY Giants general manager Joe Schoen has been able to get done was no question trading for Darren Waller. Seemingly out of nowhere, the G-Men sent a third-round pick to Vegas for one of the best tight ends in the game.
This was a major victory for Schoen and the NY front office as a whole. However, it turns out the trade could have never gone down had Green Bay or Miami gotten things across the line last year.
While speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, agent Drew Rosenhaus revealed that both the Packers and Dolphins tried to land the former Pro Bowler in 2022. Luckily for the Giants and Schoen, those two potential trades never materialized.
The Packers and Dolphins both wanted Darren Waller last season
"“The Raiders were in negotiations last year to trade Darren. Darren was very nearly traded last offseason. The Packers and the Dolphins were very interested in Darren at that time, but the trade didn’t happen. The Raiders pulled back I think right before those deals could get done.""
- Drew Rosenhaus
The Packers trying to acquire Waller sure is interesting, as they clearly wanted to add a much-needed weapon for Aaron Rodgers. That could have completely changed the way the season turned out for the AFC North side, as Green Bay missed out on the playoffs and Rodgers appears headed to the New York Jets soon.
Rosenhaus has plenty of people talking right now, but the great thing is that Waller is locked in with the Giants and he'll have big expectations for the G-Men in 2023. The main concern for the veteran TE is his health, but the Giants will have a plan in place for his practice schedule.
Waller has missed loads of contests over the past two season with various injuries, but people think he can be a stud pass-catching option for Jones this fall. There's a reason both Miami and Green Bay wanted him not too long ago: he's a total stud. Giants fans can't wait to see Waller put on a show at MetLife Stadium - September will be here before you know it.
