Star NY Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence is on top of the world right now. On Thursday afternoon, the All-Pro DT agreed to his four-year, $90 million extension with the G-Men. No one can argue that Sexy Dexy deserved his payday.
Now, Lawrence is ready to see general manager Joe Schoen also get things done with star running back Saquon Barkley. On Friday, Lawrence met with the media after signing his new deal and he made his thoughts on Saquon quite clear: he wants No. 26 to get a bag of his own.
Dexter Lawrence thinks Saquon Barkley will 'get what he deserves'
You've got to love Lawrence backing Barkley like this. Moving forward, though, it will all come down to Schoen to see if he can put the right offer on the table for his Pro Bowl back. Barkley is not happy about potentially playing the 2023 campaign on the non-exclusive franchise tag.
With him not signing his tender and also not showing up for the start of the offseason program, the belief was that he sent a strong message to Schoen and Co. Barkley wants a multi-year deal and Schoen wants to make it happen for him, but he also understands that the two sides have to find a sweet spot.
Schoen isn't going to overpay for Barkley - there's no chance Saquon is going to get Christian McCaffrey-type money. Shortly after the NFL Draft wrapped up, Schoen said he'd be ready to talk with Barkley's representatives in the near future.
The hope is that things can get finalized with Barkley sooner than later. No one wants to see any kind of contract drama with Barkley leading up to training camp. We could see some big news arrive in the near future. After wrapping things up with Sexy Dexy, Schoen will surely shift his focus to Barkley.
