Drake Maye camp update should be a total relief for NY Giants GM Joe Schoen

The No. 3 pick isn't live up to the hype for New England.

Since late April, a lot of focus has been on the NY Giants not trading up in the NFL Draft to select a Daniel Jones replacement. Danny Dimes is the guy for 2024, but his early-camp struggles have plenty of people wondering if he'll return to his 2022 form or not.

With Jones' future up in the air, some Big Blue supporters remain disappointed that he didn't do everything possible to move up to go after Drake Maye, who ended up being taken by the Patriots. As we're quickly learning, the move from college to the pros hasn't been too smooth for the first-rounder.

According to NBC Sports' Tom Curran, Maye isn't up to speed yet and he's not living up to the hype. He's not going to remind people in the Boston area of Tom Brady overnight, but a lot of passionate Pats fans were hoping he'd be looking better than he has early on:

Drake Maye isn't progressing as fast as Patriots fans would have hoped

We obviously don't want to pile on the youngster, but this should be a good reminder that it takes time for first-year QBs to adapt to the speed of the NFL and to get comfortable. This would have been the case had Maye made his way to East Rutherford.

People assumed Maye could have come in and immediately taken over as QB1 for Jones. That's not how things works. Regardless of that thinking, Maye is with New England and Brian Daboll is ready for Jones to showcase what he can do against the Vikings once Week 1 gets here.

It would have taken an unreal offer from the Giants to move up to No. 3 for this year's draft, with the package including additional first-rounders. Schoen decided to not risk the future of this team on Maye, which is looking like a brilliant decision right now. If Jones can get into a groove early on this fall, it'll only make things better for the NY front office.
