This is in no way, shape or form disrespectful to Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy, but is he really going to end up being a Top 10 pick? McCarthy is only 21 years old and his best football is no doubt ahead of him, but not long ago, it was up in the air if he'd hear his name called on draft night.
Recently, though, McCarthy's stock has gone up and there are plenty of people talking about him getting selected way earlier than most would have imagined. Could this include him hearing his name called No. 6 overall and joining the NY Giants? Pat Leonard thinks that could be in play:
There's buzz the Giants could be high on Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy
This past season for the Wolverines, the 6-3, 200-pound McCarthy tossed for 2,991 yards, 22 touchdowns and only four interceptions. There's no question he was a stud for the Big Ten powerhouse and he played a massive role in Jim Harbaugh bringing home a National Championship to his alma mater.
However, would McCarthy be worth the risk at No. 6? The Giants and Joe Schoen are in a spot where they simply have to get their first-round pick right - jobs could be on the line if Big Blue messes this one up. While people want a new QB1 of the future, fans would prefer Schoen to trade up to land either Caleb Williams, Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels.
If the Giants stand pat at No. 6, it would make way more sense for them to go after a stud offensive tackle or a superstar wideout. Either of those decisions would be beneficial for Daniel Jones, who signed his $160 million extension last offseason, but is coming off a brutal 2023.
Schoen may not be ready to give up on his monster investment of Danny Dimes, but if he is, bringing in McCarthy feels like it could prove to be a costly mistake. Reaching for McCarthy is something that a lot of people are worried the Giants will end up doing. Leonard's latest take on things will only raise more eyebrows.
