Joe Schoen and Giants sign former Chargers RB with Tyrone Tracy Jr. banged up
The NY Giants were thankfully able to avoid the worst-case scenario with rookie Tyrone Tracy Jr., as he suffered a low-ankle sprain. While he's able to do some light jogging on his own, he's still expected to miss the start of the season. Because of this, Joe Schoen has decided to bring in some help.
With the showdown with Houston right around the corner, the Giants have signed fifth-year running back Joshua Kelley to a new deal. Kelly spent the first four years of his career with the Chargers, but he was at home recently waiting to get a phone call. Schoen has made that call and now the speedster will try and turn some heads over the next couple of weeks in East Rutherford:
The NY Giants have signed fifth-year RB Joshua Kelley
Bringing in a new RB is not a surprise, as we previously wrote about veteran options the Giants could pursue. Kelley wasn't on our list, but his addition makes plenty of sense. Checking in at 5-11, 210-pounds, Kelley has great speed for his size - he's not afraid to lower his shoulder for an extra yard either.
Currently, the RBs room will feature Devin Singletary, Eric Gray and Dante 'Turbo' Miller, but now Kelley will be involved. Singletary is going to be the workhorse for this team, while Gray is now expected to be the RB2 once Week 1 rolls around. Tracy appeared to have a slight edge on Gray, but his ankle injury has provided a bit of a setback for him.
Miller has unreal speed, which he'll look to showcase against the Texans. Then there's Kelley. Last season, he appeared in 17 games for Los Angeles, with three starts. He posted 405 yards on 107 carries, with two touchdowns. Some fans were hoping for Kareem Hunt or Dalvin Cook to be signed by NY, but let's see what Kelley can do now that he'll be donning a Big Blue jersey.
