This is a bit of a surprise. Not because it's a big-name signing, but come on, plenty of us have forgotten about fullbacks. The same can't be said for NY Giants general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll.

News has just arrived that the G-Men have made a move at the position, signing veteran fullback Jakob Johnson. Johnson started off his career with the Patriots and then spent the past two seasons in Las Vegas with the Raiders. Now, it's time to see what he can do with the Giants, who will be featuring a new look for their rushing attack in 2024 now that Saquon Barkley is over in Philly.

The NY Giants have signed veteran fullback Jakob Johnson to a new deal

This comes just after the Giants signed former Chargers running back Joshua Kelley to a new deal, which made sense since Tyrone Tracy Jr. is going to be out for a little while with his sprained ankle. As for Johnson? Yup, this is also a wise addition.

Johnson has been strong lining up from his FB spot, providing quality blocks for lead runners. He has been able to get the job done both in New England and Vegas. New offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo is also quite familiar with him. Bricillo was the OL coach with NE and the Raiders before joining Coach Dabes in East Rutherford - he knows Johnson can get the job done.

While they don't always get the most love, you can't undervalue fullbacks in today's game. For the Giants, this is an interesting new piece to the offensive puzzle, as things indeed are going to be looking quite differently for the ground game now that Saquon is out of town. Johnson has appeared in 67 games throughout his career, with 34 starts. This is an intriguing signing, no doubt.
