NY Giants avoided injury headache with new Rams CB already going on IR

Throughout the offseason, NY Giants general manager Joe Schoen was working overtime in trying to add some veteran help at cornerback. Instead, he swung and missed on multiple targets and ended up bringing back Adoree' Jackson on a one-year contract. One of the players Schoen was hoping to sign was Darious Williams.

Williams came to East Rutherford for a visit, but he was looking for more dough than the Giants were willing to put on the table. Instead, he put the pen to paper on a three-year contract worth up to $30 million - yeah, the G-Men were never going to come close to that. Unfortunately for LA, Williams is dealing with a hamstring injury and he's already been placed on Injured Reserve:

Rams CB Darious Williams will miss the first four games of the season

This is a big loss for the Rams, who also signed Tre'Davious White to a new deal this offseason. Interestingly enough, the Giants were also interested in the former All-Pro playmaker, but they weren't able to finalize things with him either.

It's up in the air who will start on the opposite side of the field from Deonte Banks on Sunday against the Vikings, but it's looking like Nick McCloud will end up getting the nod. Cor'Dale Flott battled an injury all summer, while Jackson isn't quite in game shape just yet. McCloud has been a bit inconsistent, so there are a ton of concerns about his play leading up to Week 1 should he start.

Williams would have been a solid get for the Giants and the kind of stud Brian Daboll and Shane Bowen needed for this defense. However, things didn't work out for him in East Rutherford and he landed a much bigger contract with the Rams.

Obviously, we're never going to celebrate when a player on a different team is injured, but at the same time, this is a big loss for the Rams. The Giants are so thin at cornerback, so having something like this happen to them right before the showdown with the Vikings would have been catastrophic. Instead, it will be on McCloud or Flott to try and impress while Jackson looks to get himself fully ready to rock.
