4 biggest weaknesses on the NY Giants roster
By Zak Musso
1. Punter
Many in Giants Nation fell in love with Jamie Gillan last fall due to his wonderful nickname, The Scottish Hammer. Truth be told, he did very little hammering in 2022 and he was way too inconsistent for our liking.
Gillan's 46.8 yards per punt in 2022 ranked 19th among NFL punters. Gillan punted the ball 75 times a season ago, but just 26 of them landed inside the opponent's 20-yard line. Gillan had a net average of just 40.6 yards in his first season in New York. That number was tied for 26th in the NFL among all punters.
Field position matters more in the NFL now than ever before. Coaches are going for it on fourth down more than ever. If a punter can pin the opposition deep, it will likely lead to the other coach being more conservative.
It is much easier for Martindale to stop an opposing offense when he needs to just stop them three times instead of four times. If the Giants opponents have to travel a long way down the field to get into scoring position, it makes it significantly easier for Big Blue's defense to stop the opposing offense.
Gillan was not pining teams back in 2022, which put Wink's unit on its heals. The Scottish Hammer needs to start hammering fast or Schoen should replace him instantly. He needs to have a bounce-back year for this team.
