NY Giants waste no time cutting 10 players including 2022 draft pick
Following the loss to the New York Jets, it's time to get down to business for the NY Giants and head man Brian Daboll. Come Aug. 27 at 4 p.m. ET, Daboll needs to get his roster down to 53 men, which is no easy task. However, he's off to a strong start in making tough decisions, with some players already getting some unwanted news.
The Giants have announced 10 players have been notified that they won't be around for the Week 1 showdown against the Minnesota Vikings. Those players are lineman Marcus McKethan, running back Joshua Kelley, running back Lorenzo Lingard, wideout John Jiles, wideout Ayir Asante, defensive lineman Kyler Baugh, linebacker Trey Kiser, cornerback Breon Borders, cornerback Christian Holmes and safety Clayton Isbell:
The NY Giants have released 10 players ahead of cutdown day on Aug. 27
There aren't many surprises on this list, but the one that stands out would be McKethan. The youngster was a fifth-rounder in 2022 and due to so many injuries across the offensive line last season, he was forced to start five games and appeared in 16. This summer, however, as Dan Duggan noted, McKethan was never in true contention to fight for a roster spot.
Receiver Ayir Asante was an undrafted free agent the team signed following the draft, but his dream run to the 53-man roster fell short. Unfortunately for Asante, his release was sealed when he fumbled the opening kickoff against the Jets at MetLife Stadium. The only way he was going to make this team was on special teams, but he didn't get the job done.
From a roster standpoint, this is a great start for Daboll and the rest of his coaching staff, but more work is needed to get down to 53 by the Aug. 27 deadline. By 4 p.m. that day, everything needs to be finalized. So far, double digit guys have been let go and plenty more will be on the way.
