The first home game for former NY Giants running back Saquon Barkley with the Philadelphia Eagles went according to plan for about 48 minutes. Barkley ran with passion and he looked fantastic. However, countless headlines are going to be written about him due to one crucial, just devastating mistake.
The Eagles were just taken down 22-21 by the Falcons on Monday Night Football and No. 26 is receiving a ton of the blame. On a 3rd-down play with under two minutes to go, Jalen Hurts put the ball right on Barkley to catch. Had he posted the reception, he would have had a first down and the game would've been over. Instead, he somehow dropped the ball and the Falcons were given new life - they took full advantage of it:
A Saquon Barkley drop has haunted the Eagles in their loss to Atlanta
Barkley's drop came with 1:39 left on the clock. Indeed, Philly could have iced the game had he caught the ball and gotten the first down. Instead, Kirk Cousins got the rock in his hands and he wasted literally no time in moving it downfield. In the blink of an eye, the Falcons were in the Philly red zone.
On 3rd-and-5, Cousins delivered a perfect ball to Drake London for the game-tying touchdown, though he was hit with a 15-yard penalty for his celebration. No problem for kicker Younghoe Koo, however, as he drilled the 48-yard PAT to put Atlanta up one.
Hurts then tried to put together a late drive himself to put Jake Elliott in a spot where he could kick the game-winner, but the Philly QB ended up tossing an interception to Atlanta defensive back Jessie Bates III. Hurts was hit as he threw the ball, which forced the brutal turnover.
In the end, the Eagles let this one slip away - it was a game they had no business losing. With how passionate the Philly fanbase is, something tells us they're going to let Barkley have it for this nightmare mistake. Philly is now 1-1 on the year, but they really should be 2-0.
