Sean Payton quietly gives Giants fans a reason to follow the Broncos

How long before Davis Webb earns a head coaching job?

Former New York Giants quarterback Davis Webb needed to wait nearly five years before throwing his first regular-season pass.

Working his first game as an NFL play-caller won’t take nearly as long.

Webb, who is still only 31, is now the Broncos’ offensive coordinator under Sean Payton.

Fittingly, the Giants are playing a pivotal role in Webb’s coaching development, and it has nothing to do with his two stints with Big Blue.

Older Giants fans might remember that Payton was the offensive coordinator and play-caller from 2000-02.

As Payton recently recalled, he was 36 when then-Giants coach Jim Fassel allowed him to call a 1999 preseason game against the Vikings.

Fast forward to last summer, when Payton had a Broncos assistant try finding the box score.

“I had thrown (together) a couple call sheets — or basically stat sheets — from my first time and highlighted a few things (for Webb),” Payton said ($), via Nick Kosmider and Joseph Person of The Athletic.

“I said, ‘See if you can beat this,’” Payton continued. ”And he did.”

With Webb calling plays, Denver gained over 560 yards in a preseason win over the Cardinals.

Why Giants fans should consider rooting for Davis Webb

The only way the Giants would see Payton, Webb, and the Broncos would be in the Super Bowl

Webb earning such an incredible opportunity at 31 years old is a terrific story, one certainly worth following.

Payton sees enough in Webb that he relinquished play-calling duties, something he’s never done since taking over the Broncos.

Payton also rarely allowed others to call offensive plays during his 15 seasons in New Orleans.

At least at face value, Webb and the Broncos being successful has no real impact on the Giants.

However, Denver plays the loaded NFC West, and victories over the 49ers, Seahawks, and Rams could potentially help the Giants’ playoff chances

Just use caution if your fantasy football defense faces the Broncos.

In the past, we’d have said you can never bet against a Payton-led offense when the quarterback is healthy.

We’ll learn pretty quickly whether the same is true with Webb in charge.
