New York Giants: Cold Truth

facebooktwitterreddit

The New York Giants strike me as a 7-9 team at best. It isn’t an insult, it is a fair judgment based on their recent struggles and their offseason. The Giants gave me nothing to be confident about in the preseason and while this may be meaningless, the Giants have problems that aren’t just going to vanish come Sunday.

The defense still seems like a big issue to me. The safety options are problematically unproven. Jon Beason is injury prone and he is by far the best inside linebacker the Giants have. The Giants defensive line seems capable of rushing the passer but run defense is still a giant concern for the Giants.

With the return of Steve Spagnuolo the defense hopes to be resurgent. Though it really wasn’t Perry Fewell’s fault that he didn’t have the talent to work with. The talent on the defense is my main concern and while Spagnuolo is a great defensive coordinator, do we really expect him to turn water into wine?

The offense needs to carry this team but there are concerns on that side of the football as well. The offensive line is not as good as it needs to be. Marshall Newhouse is just not capable of providing consistent starting caliber right tackle. Justin Pugh is a better fit at offensive guard but he still has a lot to prove as a former first round pick.

If the offensive line isn’t good enough the Giants will struggle to run the football. The Giants will have to be a pass happy team and Manning will be under a lot of pressure. The reason the Cowboys built that offensive line was to help Tony Romo not feel like he has to do it all by himself- that is when mistakes happen. The Giants need that kind of offensive line for Manning.

So the moral of the story is that the Giants are not good enough in many key positions. They are average on the offensive line (and that may be being generous). Their defense doesn’t project to be that stingy. The team has a lot of talent in the passing game. That will have to carry the Giants if they will be successful. But all that wonderful talent could be once again wasted.

Like I said the Giants strike me as a 7-9 football team at best. I hope I am wrong but based on their struggles last season, a fair number of injuries already this season and their troubling offseason events, I have a hard time seeing my opinion as unfair.
