The right side of the New York Giants offensive line has been a source of frustration for Big Blue’s fans. Some have suggested the G-Men trade for San Francisco 49ers right tackle Anthony Davis.

Height: 6 feet, 5 inches | Weight: 323 pounds
Born: October 11, 1989 in Piscataway, NJ (Age 26)

At Rutgers, Davis was a Freshman All-America in 2007, first-team All-Big East in 2008, and second-team All-America and first-team All-Big East in 2009. Anthony was then drafted by the Niners in the 1st round (11th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft.

On July 30, 2010, Davis signed a five-year contract worth $37.5 million, with $15.95 million guaranteed. That contract is currently considered dead due to his temporary retirement, which was announced in June 2015.

In that announcement, Davis stated he wanted time to “let his brain and body heal”, but vowed a return after the break, claiming he wanted to return as the best right tackle in the league.

Davis never missed a start from 2010 through Week 7 of the 2014 season. From 2010 through 2013, Davis averaged an approximate value of 7 – 8 according to Pro Football Reference.

In late February 2016, Davis officially sought reinstatement, marking his possible return for the 2016 season.

  • The Giants have enough space under the salary cap to take on Anthony’s contract, so it comes down to a few items:

    1. How do the Giants know Davis won’t just retire again once he starts taking on some bumps and bruises?
    2. Davis seems like a very outspoken guy who rocks the boat, publicly calling out the 49ers organization. How will that play in the locker room? The Giants aren’t known for bringing on too many big egos.
    3. Who or what can the Giants afford to give up to get Davis? San Francisco needs a quarterback – should Big Blue offer up Ryan Nassib? San Fran needs a wide receiver – a position the Giants just fortified with Sterling Shepard, so I don’t see a match there. The Niners also need a linebacker – a position that just got really deep with the acquisitions of Keenan Robinson and Kelvin Sheppard. Would the Giants consider parting with one, plus a draft pick to bring in Davis?

I don’t see a scenario where this trade works out, but considering the severe backlash over the Giants neglecting the offensive line in the draft, and the tremendous lack of confidence in John Jerry and Marshall Newhouse, it could be worth entertaining the notion.
