Geoff Schwartz Injury Update

When the Giants signed left guard Geoff Schwartz to a four year, $16.8 million contract after the start of this past offseason, the team was excited to see one of the best guards stay put. Considered one of the top offensive linemen in the NFL, Schwartz was expected to help shore up the much maligned left side of a New York Giants’ offensive line that was nothing short of horrendous last season. Unfortunately due to a severe toe injury, it put Schwartz on short term injured reserve with the first chance to see him play again coming around Week 9 against the Indianapolis Colts. Luckily for the Giants, it’s now his time to bounce back as this is indeed the week that he was removed from injured reserve and placed back on the main roster.

It is unclear whether or not Schwartz will play on Monday Night Football against the Colts but hopefully he’ll see some playing time. This game could very well could turn out to be a shootout considering how Ben Roethlisberger and his Pittsburgh Steelers amassed 522 passing yards and six touchdowns last Sunday in their victory over the Colts.

The Giants currently sit at 3-4 and could desperately use a huge win at home after watching the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys both suffer losses last Sunday. Big Blue needs a win to climb back into the race for the NFC East and keep their playoff hopes alive since they are in a great position to do so.

Having Schwartz on the field provides a huge boost to an inconsistent offensive line and they will need him in order for Eli Manning and company to keep pace with Andrew Luck and his high-powered style of offense. Schwartz was listed as limited in practice so far this week but hasn’t done much work yet as head coach Tom Coughlin stated that Schwartz still “needs time.”

The Giants have six days to evaluate Schwartz and see if he can progress enough to get him back on the field. Right now it is very iffy if Schwartz will play and the Giants tend to be conservative when it comes to players returning from injury to lessen the likelihood of re-aggravating the injury.

It would be great to see Schwartz back on the field and many can’t wait to see him return but not at the expense of potentially re-injuring himself. If Schwartz is able to suit up for this game, it will be interesting to see the changes the coaching staff will make to the offensive line wherever Schwartz is starting.

One thing is for certain, if the Giants wish to keep their playoff hopes alive, they will need Schwartz to return sooner rather than later to help fix one of the team’s biggest weaknesses.
