New York Giants Unfortunately Can’t Afford Ndamukong Suh

Detroit Lions’ defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh is scheduled to become a free agent this coming off-season. With Suh excepted to command record breaking money, many believe Detroit has become resigned to the fact their favorite cornhusk is soon to be an ex-Lion.

It is exceedingly rare that a player like Suh hits the market in the mist of his prime. Suh is arguably the best interior defensive linemen in the entire NFL. He is a player capable of completely changing the face of any defense. He is also one of the few players that can easily change a defense into a true shut-down one.

Suh has the ability to take an average defense, and make it good, the ability to take a good defense, and make it great. Well, the Giants’ defense are in a desperate need of a spark, which raises the question, could Suh be a perfect fit for this team?

In theory sure, New York boasts a proud history on the defensive side of the ball, and in order to get back to where they except to be, changes must be made. Looking back on the Giants two most recent Super Bowl winning teams (2007 and 2011), fans will remember the G-Men at times were carried by fierce defensive lines.

Coach Coughlin’s teams were touted for their ability to get to the quarterback without being at the disadvantage of having to blitz. Suh is a player that most definitely could help in the Giants getting back to that. As a tremendous interior pass rusher and an exceptional run stopper, Suh would be one of the Giants all-time great defensive linemen.

So yes, like saying, in theory, it actually does naturally make sense to think the Giants would be wise to at least try to sign Suh.

However I am here to tell you the opposite. I personally do not think signing Suh would be a sound move for the Giants. You see, signing Suh would garner a very large portion of the Giants available salary cap space. Possible even all of the team’s remaining cap space for just a single player.

With the present state of the franchise, there are simply too many moves to be made, too many flaws to be addressed to offer one player so much money. This is a team with glaring issues all over the field, not just on the defensive line. Frankly the offensive line might be worse off than the defensive line, with question marks at all five positions. New York’s secondary is a huge question mark as well.

As always the linebackers are once again a huge question mark. The list goes on to be quite honest. My point is signing a player like Suh would in concept be awesome, but in reality just isn’t practical. Suh is one heck of a player, I am not disputing that. Even still, a player of Suh’s class doesn’t carry the worth the Giants would need to devote this type of potential capital.

Frankly, unless you are going to tell me Suh can play defensive tackle, along with all five offensive line positions, all three linebacker positions, and help out at corner, it just doesn’t make sense for the Giants.

The fact Suh says he likes the idea of playing in New York is nice, I for one am glad he likes our city. Suh’s a great player; a player that would greatly help any NFL franchise.  I believe that franchise will not, and should not be the Giants since that money could be used to bolster other areas on the team that are in dire need for upgrades.
