Ereck Flowers will be asked to fill in at the all important left tackle position now that the Giants will be without the services of Will Beatty for 5-6 months. Flowers is an impressive rookie but how well will his transition from prospect to pro go?
Flowers has the physical tool set required to play the left tackle position, in fact he looks like a prototype. Flowers is a massive 6-6 329 pound man with an insane amount of strength. Flowers was a highly coveted prospect in the NFL draft, and the Giants were thrilled to get him with the ninth overall selection. The Giants however were not intending to start Flowers at the left tackle position immediately but now they have no choice.
Flowers is a powerful run blocker and his ability to plow defensive linemen and to block linebackers in the second level of the defense should improve the Giants rushing attack. Run blocking nor size and strength are the concerns the Giants have for Flowers.
Flowers pass protection technique is a little raw. He needs to work on his footwork especially in the pass protecting department. Flowers will be tasked with protecting Eli Manning’s blind side. If Flowers cannot deliver this protection than the Giants will be forced to move Flowers to the right tackle position. If this happens the offensive line will have to be reshuffled and the Giants offensive line may struggle.
The Giants probably have never been so desperate to have a rookie play so well right away. Flowers will be a key piece to the puzzle in the 2015 season and only time will tell if its for better or for worse.
