New York Giants: Evan Mathis Would Be A Key Signing

facebooktwitterreddit

The New York Giants passed up veteran free agent Jake Long for more than one reason. Since Will Beatty was injured, the Giants have been exploring some offensive line options for depth. This way they would be able to move players around the line and have more flexibility. Evan Mathis would be the perfect fit for the Giants’ offensive line.

The Pro-Bowl guard was released by the Philadelphia Eagles earlier today. Since 2012, he has made two Pro-Bowls. Losing Beatty at left tackle means that rookie Ereck Flowers would have to come in and replace him. Having a rookie protect Eli Manning’s blind side may not be the smartest of moves. So a veteran like Mathis playing next to him may help his game play.

Signing a plug-and-play lineman like Mathis would greatly benefit the Giants. Not to mention that they could get him for cheap. Most of the teams in the NFL already have their rosters set. So he wouldn’t break the bank too much. Let’s say for arguments sake that the Giants do decide to sign Mathis. Their line may look a little something like this:

Left Tackle: Ereck Flowers

Left Guard: Evan Mathis

Center: Weston Richburg

Right Guard: Geoff Schwartz

Right Tackle: Justin Pugh

That starting offensive line sounds pretty solid to me. All those are brand name offensive linemen and hopefully would be able to get the job done. Having a good offensive line is key to the Giants’ success in 2015, so signing Mathis is a must. I’m sure Mathis would love nothing more than to get a little revenge against the Eagles twice per season.
