New York Giants: How To Sign Jason Pierre-Paul

Whether or not the Giants decide to keep their franchise tender on the table for Jason Pierre-Paul or rescind it,  I think they would be smart to offer their digitally challenged star a long-term incentive laden contract.

There is a chance that Pierre-Paul never recovers from this accident and his football career ends rather un-ceremoniously. Then again  I think there is a better chance that he overcomes it. I would hate to lose a finger, in fact I can’t even imagine it, but he did not lose a limb or major appendage.

I think he’ll be able to continue playing at the same level, just not immediately. I would bet on him returning to form somewhere down the line, hopefully sooner than later. The Giant’s front office is in a much better position to judge that. If they do feel he will be fine to continue playing football they should consider offering him a long-term deal loaded with incentives.

The contract I would offer him if I was Giant’s brass would be 4 or 5 years for a total of $10-15 million just as a base salary with a Guarantee on the year’s salary on the first day of the league year. After that I would insert all kinds of escalators to guarantee more money down the line.

One for tackles, one for sacks, one for fumbles recovered and forced, one for touchdown, and one for snaps played. Each one of these for around $1.5 million, and if he reaches a certain number of any of these categories,  guarantee his next year’s salary. Maybe offer him a deal that does not pay him much for the 2015 season and has some back loaded guaranteed money.

I’m not an agent but I would shoot for something along those lines. Now that doesn’t mean he would accept a deal like that, especially since he already shot down a $60 million deal, but its worth a shot to try to low ball a little here.

It was a smart move by the Giants to rescind the long-term contract. Real smart. However if they just let him walk it could backfire and could be something the Giant’s and their fans regret. It may be a shrewd thing to say at this time but the Giants should use this to their advantage and try to lock up Pierre-Paul now while his price is much lower than it was just one week ago.
