Despite the New York Giants actually being healthier than most football teams heading into Week 12, the team still could be without multiple starters.

Without much left the officially play for in 2019, the New York Giants have not entertained the idea of getting younger players more into the mix. It looks like Head Coach Pat Shurmur won’t have a choice in that matter this week, though, as Big Blue could have as many as five starters out for this Week 12 contest against the Chicago Bears.

The official injury report is a tricky one this week, as the Giants have four players dealing with concussion issues. As such, even though three of them weren’t officially listed on Friday’s injury report, they still have to clear protocol by Sunday to be able to suit up.

Here’s a rundown of all the Giants that are in danger – or have already been ruled out – of missing this game.

TE Evan Engram (foot)

The injury woes for the talented tight end continue, as Evan Engram has been officially ruled out for Sunday’s contest. It will be Engram’s second straight missed game, which is in line with the early 3-5 week timeline he was given when he initially suffered the foot injury. Since suiting up for 15 games as a rookie, the former first-round draft pick has struggled to stay healthy. Engram missed five games last year (and parts of multiple others), and the team is hoping he can be cleared for next week’s game against Green Bay.

Scott Simonson, who was just added back onto the roster after being injured in the pre-season, and youngster Kaden Smith, who was added via waivers from the 49ers earlier in the season, figure to get most of the snaps at tight end this week.

TE Rhett Ellison (concussion)

Rhett Ellison has simply not lived up to his 4/18M$ contract with Big Blue, and he won’t get the chance to attempt to against Chicago on Sunday. Ellison suffered a concussion against the Jets in Week 10 (something that’s been unfortunately all too common for New York Giants players this season), and has been officially ruled out of this contest. All eyes will be on the aforementioned Simonson and Smith, as they look to show the team they can step up and be the number two option behind Engram moving forward.

CB Janoris Jenkins (concussion)

Janoris Jenkins was one of three New York Giants to suffer a concussion against the Jets, but unlike Ellison, he was not officially ruled out on Friday. Jenkins still has to be cleared of concussion protocol before he can suit up on Sunday, but the fact that he wasn’t listed on the official Friday report bodes well for his chances of playing. If he can’t go, expect 2018 third-round supplemental draft pick Sam Beal to get his first real taste of game action.

OT Nate Solder (concussion)

Like Jenkins, Nate Solder suffered a concussion against the Jets in Week 10 but was not listed on the team’s official injury report on Friday. It’s worth noting that Solder was not with the team on Monday for what was deemed “personal reasons”, although i’m not sure what can be drawn from that. Head Coach Pat Shurmur has made it known that Solder and veteran Mike Remmers will “hold down” the tackle positions if they are healthy enough to do so, so if Solder is active, we won’t get to see Nick Gates – who looked promising in his debut – in Week 12 (as a starter).

WR Sterling Shepard (concussion)

I’ve made my feelings on Shepard playing again this season known, but the wide-receiver seems hell-bent on getting back out onto the field in 2019. The former Oklahoma star has always been tough, and if team doctors don’t feel he’s putting himself at any future risk by playing (i’m not sure how they could confidently say that, though), I guess it’s really up to him.

The 26-year-old hasn’t played since Week 5 against the Vikings after suffering two brutal concussions in a short span.

C Jon Halapio (hamstring), T Mike Remmers (back) set to return

The New York Giants will be getting two starters back along the offensive line, although if you’ve watched the unit play this year, you’d be right to question if that’s really a good thing. While the team surely wants to protect star rookie QB Daniel Jones at all costs, these two have not proven able to do so for the better part of the season.

Nick Gates filled in admirably for Remmers in Week 10 against the Jets, although Spencer Pulley certainly had his issues filling in for Halapio at center.

Bears injury report

With QB Mitchell Trubisky (hip)  being officially ruled active for this week’s game on Friday, much of the mystery surrounding the Bears’ quarterback room has been solved. The former No.2 overall draft pick was pulled from last week’s loss against the Rams late, which led many to believe that an injury hadn’t actually occurred, and that Head Coach Matt Nagy was really just attempting a last ditch effort.

Tight end Adam Shaheen (foot) and linebacker Danny Trevathan (elbow) have not practice all week, so they both don’t figure to suit up for the contest. Other than that, the Bears figure to be pretty much at full strength as offensive lineman Bobby Massie (back) practiced in full this week.
