The time has finally come. After months of rumors, mock drafts, free agency moves, and everything else in between, it’s time for Round 1 of the 2022 NFL Draft. The NY Giants have two first-round picks to work with at No. 5 and No. 7 with hopes of selecting two top prospects ready to build a foundation for a better future.
Make no mistake about it, these are premium draft picks on top of the fact that the Giants have two of them in the top 10 selections of the NFL Draft order. This should undoubtedly help them address some of their most glaring issues on the roster, especially by drafting new talent to their offensive line above anything else. This is a higher priority than adding better receiving targets and even higher than bolstering their defensive line.
If one had to make three bold predictions for what will transpire tonight for the Giants in Round 1, it would be…
NY Giants will draft a new OT, DE, and stay put at No. 5 & No. 7
- Drafting a new offensive tackle
- Drafting an edge rusher
- No trades to move up or down the Round 1 draft order
In the grand scheme of things, it’s easy to see the Giants drafting a new offensive tackle to help strengthen their offensive line. The Giants should use their No. 5 overall pick and draft the best offensive tackle available. Hopefully, it’s Evan Neal out of Alabama as he would be a perfect fit for Big Blue.
With their No. 7 overall pick, I predict they’ll definitely go edge rusher here. They need a premier defensive end that specializes in pressuring and taking down opposing quarterbacks. The same principle would apply here as they should take the best available edge rusher when they’re on the clock at No. 7. For me, I’d love to see them take Jermaine Johnson out of Florida State above anyone else.
Finally, contrary to many rumors, the Giants will not move up or down from the current picks they have in Round 1. No, they’re not going to have any trades with other teams involving swapping draft picks and will hold onto the No. 5 and No. 7 respectively to use them wisely to draft their future star offensive tackle and defensive end.
The football world will see what happens tonight as these are just my predictions for the Giants and well, I just hope they get it right so we can all sleep easy tonight. I don’t want to see a new quarterback drafted, wide receiver, or a defensive back. That can all easily wait for Day 2 and Day 3 of this year’s draft to address. If they leave tonight’s first round with a top offensive tackle and defensive end, I will be one happy camper.
