Julian Love becoming NY Giants leader at the right time
By James Nolan
The NY Giants have gotten off to an extraordinary start, as they are currently 6-1 through the first seven weeks. One of the biggest factors in their success so far has been the stout defensive performances. Julian Love has been nothing short of fantastic, as he’s winning over more and more fans by the minute.
The 24-year-old has always been talented, but this season he’s taken a huge step forward. Not only has his play gotten better, but he’s also become a leader on the defensive side. Love leads the team in tackles with 50, along with having the team’s only interception.
Julian Love and the NY Giants stop teams on 3rd down
Love is off to the best start off is career, and his production has been contributing to the changing tide in the Giants locker room. The former fourth-rounder has been all over the field this season, making big plays in crucial spots.
The most important down in football is third down. Great teams make stops, and convert on third-downs. This season New York’s defense ranks seventh on third downs, only allowing conversions at a very low 34.5 percent rate.
One of the best players for the Giants this season on third down has been Love. He consistently shows up, as he had the big late-game pick against Lamar Jackson and the Ravens. On top of that, he also recorded a huge late-game sack in Week 2. On top of that, even as a safety he still is third on the team for tackles for a loss, with 3.0 total TFL.
The Giants safety has shown up when they needed him most on multiple occasions this fall, and it is one of the reasons he is one of the more respected guys on the team as well.
Love is showing his leadership qualities for the NY Giants
Although Love has arguably been one of the best players for New York this season, he is still quick to give credit to his teammates. The 24-year-old playmakers is one of the most selfless players in the locker room.
New York is built around two things this season: a strong run game and gritty defense. As a fourth-rounder, Love is the definition of grit. His work ethic is translating to his stellar season, and the Giants got it at the right time.
With the Giants being 6-1, they have a legitimate shot at a run for the postseason. In order for that to happen, though, the energy on the defensive side needs to stay present. If Love keeps showing up every week, then they should expect it to be there.
