The New York Giants made what seemed like a routine coaching hire this week, bringing in Chad Hall as their new assistant quarterbacks coach. On paper, it’s a logical move—Hall has worked with head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen before, and he’s built a solid reputation as a wide receivers coach in Buffalo and Jacksonville.

But then ESPN’s Adam Schefter casually dropped a detail that set the football rumor mill on fire.

Hall, as Schefter pointed out, is the brother-in-law of Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford. And with Stafford’s future in LA uncertain, this hire suddenly looks a lot more interesting. Was this just a coincidence, or are the Giants positioning themselves for a blockbuster move?

Is Matthew Stafford coming to save the NY Giants?

Let’s pump the brakes for a second—there’s been no official indication that the Rams are looking to move on from Stafford. He’s still under contract, and he just proved he can still sling it, leading LA to the playoffs and coming within one drive of the NFC Championship Game. If Sean McVay and the Rams want to keep contending, trading away Stafford doesn’t make much sense.

But here’s where things get tricky. There have been rumblings about a potential Rams reset, and at 37 years old, Stafford’s timeline doesn’t exactly align with a long-term rebuild or reset. The biggest wildcard? His contract. Stafford will soon seek an extension, and if those negotiations hit a snag, LA might decide it’s time to move on.

If that happens, the Giants suddenly make a whole lot of sense. New York desperately needs a quarterback.

The draft might not fall in their favor, with the top two picks potentially being quarterbacks. Even if they do land a rookie, bringing in a bridge quarterback like Stafford could be an ideal situation for the soon-to-be signal-caller—let him hold down the fort while mentoring the next franchise guy.

Could Stafford be that guy? Well, his brother-in-law just took a job in the same building. Coincidence? Maybe. But the NFL isn’t always a league built on random coincidences. However, Schefter knew what he was doing with his post: "Hall also is the brother-in-law of current Rams QB Matthew Stafford." Schefter included that for a reason. Say less.

Of course, any deal would need to make sense financially, and the Rams would have to be willing to part ways with Stafford. But if his situation in LA remains uncertain, expect his name to be linked to the Giants all offseason. For now, Hall is just another assistant coach. But if the Giants start sniffing around for a veteran quarterback, don’t be shocked if this move suddenly looks a lot more strategic than it does today.

If the price isn’t outrageous, this could be exactly the kind of move the Giants need to snap out of their seemingly endless funk. Stafford still has gas left in the tank, and if Schoen and Daboll truly believe this roster is closer to competing than rebuilding, adding a proven veteran could be the jolt that gets them back on track.
