The New York Giants need a new quarterback after the whole Daniel Jones mess blew up in their face, and there may be no better option for a team that is desperate to try to win now than bringing in Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford after the trade rumors started to pop up.
Stafford is still one of the better quarterbacks in the NFC, though it seems like his Rams have hit a firm ceiling. Stafford could be in the mood for a new challenge, while the Rams could attempt to shed some salary as they try to continue their recent youth movement.
The Giants, if they don't draft a quarterback, could be at the front of the line for Stafford in the offseason. However, things could get a bit hairy for New York, as the Rams will be asking for some incredibly valuable capital if they want to make this move.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Rams are reportedly asking for a first-round pick if they are going to trade Stafford. The Giants, in possession of the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, will need to surrender some serious capital if they want an immediate change.
Giants may need to trade first-round pick to Rams for Matthew Stafford
While Stafford would immediately give the Giants credibility as an offense, especially with the emergence of Malik Nabers as a star in the making, this team is still just a few months removed from narrowly missing out on the No. 1 overall pick. That doesn't happen without some egregious roster flaws.
Trading that pick may not be ideal for a Giants team that has one of the worst secondaries in the NFC, an average offensive line, and a lack of receiving talent outside of Nabers. Stafford is an older quarterback who lacks mobility, and there could be some regression fears in play if he leaves Sean McVay.
However, Stafford has been able to make things work with a suspect offensive line in Los Angeles over the last few seasons. This roster is by no means barren, which could give Stafford the support he needs to take this team back to respectability.
Both Brian Daboll and Jor Schoen will be out of work if the 2025 season ends in disaster, which could prompt the Giants to be very aggressive in trying to land a quarterback. Stafford will fix their losing ways, but he won't come cheap.
