John Harbaugh and the New York Giants finally filled the biggest hole on their new coaching staff: QBs coach. The goal for Harbaugh has always been to put Jaxson Dart at the forefront of his goals with the Giants, and he did so by hiring another failed head coach to join Matt Nagy's offensive staff.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported this morning that the Giants were hiring Brian Callahan to be their quarterbacks coach, but to also assume the role of passing game coordinator. This came out after he interviewed with the team on Tuesday, so Big Blue moved quickly to make this a reality.
Callahan was woefully in over his head as the head coach of the Tennessee Titans, as he was fired after six games in 2025 after compiling a 4-19 record at the helm. And he did horrible things, calling plays with Cam Ward to the point he had to relinquish play-calling duties as a first-time play-caller.
That isn't the most encouraging track record for a guy who will hold the fate of Dart's development in his hands, but this is also why he got a major demotion. But given he's another experienced coach who can work with the young signal-caller, it's hard not to trust Harbaugh in seeing this one through.
John Harbaugh hiring Brian Callahan as QBs coach and passing game coordinator to work with Jaxson Dart
If you were having heart palpitations after reading my introduction, I have some good news for you. Callahan was the QBs coach for reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford in Detroit and Derek Carr in Oakland, so he has worked with some great signal-callers and some dangerous passing attacks.
Obviously, we all know about his time as the Bengals' OC working with Joe Burrow, even if Zac Taylor was the one calling plays. He was still working closely with one of the league's best quarterbacks and oversaw an elite offense, even if he wasn't the one having direct contract with Burrow on Sundays.
The G-Men need someone who's been around the block to keep their 22-year-old franchise QB in check, and Callahan can be just that. Even if some of his past destinations haven't been stellar, he still comes with experience in a multitude of roles, and at 41, he's one of the younger assistants on staff.
Now the Giants have four coaches on offense with offensive coordinator experience: Nagy, Greg Roman, Callahan, and Tim Kelly. Now it's easy to be worried about this staff, but given Harbaugh is bringing in Callahan in a lower-leverage position, there's no risk and a lot of reward involved for Dart.
