Office politics at its finest.

Apparently, New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll forgot that fans knew he was on the hot seat. As if, somehow overnight, Big Blue Nation’s memory of the 3-14 disaster in 2024 was wiped clean, along with owner John Mara’s public comments about lacking patience. Some of us didn’t forget.

In a move now being dressed up as “what’s best for the team,” Daboll officially announced Tuesday that the G-Men will move forward with rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart under center. He claimed it was solely his decision. No one else’s. ESPN’s Adam Schefter also reported the change is permanent for the rest of the season. Again, all for the betterment of the team. I can’t stress enough how this has absolutely nothing to do with Daboll sitting on a seat so scorching hot, it rivals the surface of the sun.

Unless... you don’t think — no, it’s not possible Mara had anything to do with this, right? He couldn’t have. It’s not like he was there Sunday night at MetLife for the home opener, hearing boos echo like it was 2024 all over again, or the crowd erupting into “We want Dart!” chants. Or maybe that’s exactly what happened — and now Daboll is just doing his boss’s bidding while trying to save face in public.

Brian Daboll’s explanation to start Jaxson Dart doesn’t pass the smell test

It’d be unfair for fans to expect Dabs not to play the office politics game, but it would’ve been refreshing if he’d just said how he actually came to this decision. It's tough to upset the boss, I get it. But just say Mara told you to do it, because this won’t convince anyone it was anything other than lies.

This is a head coach not one year removed from the worst season in franchise history, and now he’s off to an even worse start at 0-3. Saying this is what’s best only makes sense if it didn’t reek of desperation. Again, not that he's going to come out and say that, but still.

Daboll is week-to-week at this point, so consider Dart his final Hail Mary to save what little time he has left. But don’t try to force-feed fans nonsense. This fan base deserves better.

What has Daboll seen since Sunday night's 22-9 debacle that would indicate the 22-year-old has suddenly become ready to start? Maybe it’s just Wilson’s struggles, but it also looks a lot like a guy backed into a corner, scrambling for answers. Because if he actually thought Dart was ready, why wouldn’t he let him throw a single pass during any of the six snaps he’s taken in a live game?

Opinions will be split on whether this is the right decision. A tough Week 4 awaits a quarterback who, as of last Sunday, wasn’t ready enough to throw a pass, let alone start — so yeah, it feels like a desperate shift. Regardless, Daboll’s refusal to acknowledge this might not be all his doing only sets Dart up to fail. The team needs a fresh face under center.

The fans know it. They're literally screaming for it. So just own it.

Say whatever you want, but Giants fans aren’t dumb. They know a cover story when they see one. And they could see this one from space.
