There aren't many NFL players as unpredictable as New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo. The 2025 draft pick has won the hearts of Giants fans with his high-energy personality and physical style of play, but he's good for a few panic-inducing moments each year.
He delivered one of his most worrying moments yet this week. During an appearance on the "Up & Adams Show" with Kay Adams, the running back revealed that he considered retirement during his rookie season.
Skattebo told Adams, "Coming out of college and going into the NFL, I think I gave myself one rule and it was if I ever got a major injury I was done playing. And that happened seven games into my career, so it kind of sucked."
He was closest to retiring during his recovery from the leg injury he suffered in the middle of the season. He said, "Like the first month, I was like 'Damn, do I really want to do this?' And then it was seven games, you know, I got to go back and play."

Of course, we can't blame a player for wanting to protect his long-term health. Football takes a physical toll, especially for a player who is getting hit on nearly every snap.
Unfortunately, the young running back's style of play lends itself to more injuries. He doesn't shy away from hits, seeking out contact when he has the ball in his hands. He'll be at risk of getting injured again this season, especially if he takes on an increased workload.
Skattebo feels ready to play in 2026 and said that he's motivated for his second year. He even set a target of 2,000 rushing yards earlier this offseason. But his thoughts of an early retirement have to affect New York's plans moving forward.
The Giants already added some insurance at the position by signing Najee Harris. The veteran could fill in when necessary, with Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary helping out. More reinforcements might be necessary in 2027.
The 2027 NFL Draft is full of talented running backs, with names like Kewan Lacy and Jadan Baugh headlining the list of prospects. Established backs like Chase Brown and D'Andre Swift could be available in free agency.
If another major injury is going to push Skattebo into an early retirement, it's time for the Giants to start looking at other long-term solutions at running back.
