The New York Giants’ backfield makeover didn’t end with Saquon Barkley walking out the door. They spent last year figuring out what they had in Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary. Now, they may have found their new hammer in fourth-round pick Cam Skattebo.
At pick No. 105, Joe Schoen pulled the trigger on the Arizona State bruiser, a pick that’s now getting national love. Mason Cameron of Pro Football Focus just named Skattebo one of the biggest steals of the 2025 NFL Draft, pointing to his top-3 running back ranking and No. 51 spot on PFF’s Big Board.
This was a strong value pick for the Giants, and Skattebo has the skill set to push Tracy for RB1 snaps immediately and make a real impact in 2025.
Giants'may have found their new offensive tone-setter in Cam Skattebo
Skattebo isn’t flashy. He’s not built like a track star and he doesn’t have that breakaway juice. But what he does have is a style tailor-made for the NFC East. At 5-foot-9, 219 pounds, he runs angry. He lives for contact. He finished last season with over 1,700 rushing yards, 600 receiving yards, and a runner-up to Ashton Jeanty (163) with 120 missed tackles forced on the ground, per PFF. Cameron broke it down simply:
“Skattebo was RB3 and the No. 51 overall player on the PFF Big Board, making this a strong value pick for the Giants at the top of the fourth round... Skattebo ranked above the 85th percentile in PFF rushing grade in both gap and zone schemes in 2024 and was the only running back besides Ashton Jeanty to force more than 100 missed tackles on the ground last season."
The numbers match the tape. He’s a plug-and-play fit, especially in short yardage, where his contact balance and leg drive can change the math for an offense. Getting a literal borderline top 50 talent at 105 is incredible value.
And make no mistake about it—this is a pick that puts pressure on Tyrone Tracy Jr. While Tracy flashed last year, the addition of Skattebo signals that the job isn’t locked down. If Tracy slips up, Skattebo could absolutely leapfrog him by midseason.
This also creates a ripple effect on the depth chart. Singletary and Eric Gray are now staring at uncertain futures. Skattebo’s arrival means fewer touches, and possibly fewer roster spots, for the rest of the room. If Singletary doesn’t shine early in camp, his $1.5M in cap savings could become tempting.
But for now, Giants fans should just enjoy this one. We already know some of the players are. Schoen found a blue-collar battering ram who fits the identity this team is trying to build. If Jaxson Dart eventually takes over at quarterback, having a back like Skattebo behind him could be a key piece to easing the transition.
Skattebo might’ve slipped to Day 3, but don’t be overly surprised if he’s one of the picks everyone’s talking about by October.
