Physical, tough, smart, and detailed. Those four words are at the core of New York Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy's system. Nagy laid out that identity for his players in a recent episode of "Giants Life," saying, "Every team in the NFL, the 31 other teams, are going to feel that from us. I promise you that."
There may be no player on the Giants' offense that fits the bill more than rookie guard Francis Mauigoa. The former Miami tackle brings the calculated grit that Nagy is looking for in his players.
It's part of why Nick Baumgardner of The Athletic said, "This still feels like one of the best fits of the first round."
Francis Mauigoa is built for Matt Nagy's Giants offense
At 6-foot-5 and 329 pounds, Mauigoa doesn't have any problems with physicality. His collegiate tape showed enough tenacity to make an offensive line coach giddy. He consistently locked onto defenders and drove them off their spot.
As one of the first major moves under John Harbaugh, the selection of Mauigoa sent an obvious message that the Giants want to win in the trenches. New York traded away superstar defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II for the pick they used to get Mauigoa. Clearly, the franchise is prioritizing the offensive line more than it has before.
The rookie is expected to start for the G-Men at right guard, transitioning inside from the right tackle position he played in college. His broad frame and heavy hands suggest a smooth switch.
But Mauigoa doesn't only embody the physicality and toughness that Nagy is looking for. He brings the smart, detailed play style that his offensive coordinator wants.
He's already showing it off in training camp, earning the respect of his teammates. Right tackle Jermaine Eluemenor recently said, "You can tell that he has that leadership trait that is rare in a young guy his age. I think, what, he's 21? And so, the sky's the limit for him, too."
Mauigoa will thrive in the Giants' offensive system, as gap-scheme running looks will highlight his physicality while covering some of his weaknesses in lateral movement. Sisi played in a gap-scheme offense in college, so he'll be familiar with Nagy's system.
His tenacity both as a run blocker and pass protector will set second-year Giants Jaxson Dart and Cam Skattebo up to thrive. If early returns are any indication, the G-Men couldn't have made a better selection at No. 10.
