For years, the New York Giants have struggled to field an efficient offense. Through multiple personnel and coaching changes, the unit has been unable to escape the middle of the pack in most NFL metrics.
New York's rushing efficiency has been a consistent point of tension. Despite featuring a downhill running back in Cam Skattebo, the G-Men were unable to dominate in the running game.
Rookie offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa is here to finally solve that problem. Training camp hasn't even started yet, and he's already standing out as a factor in the Giants' rushing attack. With a strong start to his career, he could become the key that fully unlocks New York's ground game.
Giants' Francis Mauigoa is already standing out
In a recent ESPN article that provided updates on all 32 first-round rookies, Giants reporter Jordan Raanan had high praise for Mauigoa.
Raanan said, "Mauigoa plugged in immediately at right guard next to tackle Jermaine Eluemunor with the first-team offense in the spring. Mauigoa's desire to learn and impressive physical talent stood out to Eluemunor. It's hard to imagine, considering his size and body composition, that Mauigoa isn't immediately a plus run blocker from the start during his rookie season."
It's always a good sign when a rookie immediately impresses a nine-year NFL vet. Clearly, Mauigoa has made an impact early in the offseason. According to Raanan, he should provide an instant boost to the Giants' rushing attack.
Last season, Big Blue ranked 18th in the NFL in average rushing yards per attempt with 4.3. Their PFF team run blocking grade fell 19th in the league. It was an average run game at best, far from anything worth building an offense around.
Mauigoa should be exactly what the G-Men need to right the ship. Before the NFL Draft, he was praised as a physical blocker with the muscle to drive NFL defensive linemen back. He received a run-blocking grade of 77.1 after starting in all 16 of Miami's games in 2025.
The Giants traded Dexter Lawrence II away for the pick they used to draft Mauigoa. They then made multiple signings to improve the rushing attack, including fullback Patrick ricard. Clearly, Joe Schoen and John Harbaugh are fixated on having an efficient ground game.
Mauigoa will be the key to bringing that efficiency to life. If early returns are any indication, he might be the exact player the Giants needed on the offensive line.
