Giants DC Shane Bowen throws himself under the bus over awful mistake vs. Bengals

Yup, this is a call he wants back.

For the majority of Sunday Night Football vs. the Cincinnati Bengals, the NY Giants defense looked like an elite unit. Joe Burrow was held in check and quiet nights were posted by stud wide receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.

Shane Bowen called a great game, but there was one play in particular that kept him and a lot of others up late that night. We're of course talking about Joe Burrow's 47-yard touchdown run, which came on 3rd-and-18.

Bowen decided to line up most of his pressure on one side, leaving only a couple of guys on the other. Burrow realized this and after he saw a gaping hole up the middle, he took off. Azeez Ojulari dove full extension to try and trip him up, but he failed and Burrow dove into the end zone not long after. Bowen himself knows it was a bone-headed mistake on his part:

Shane Bowen put himself on blast for a terrible call in the Giants Week 7 loss

Watching this play unfold was maddening for a lot of people. The Giants had a great chance to get off the field and make a statement early, but Bowen really dropped the ball here. We're not quite sure what he was thinking and obviously he now regrets the decision.

The Giants ended up losing the game 17-7, but again, outside of the Burrow run, the Bengals offense wasn't able to do much of anything. The same can be said for the Giants, though, as Brian Daboll and Daniel Jones are still getting ripped for such a disappointing performance.

In the end, the Burrow run played a massive role in the Giants falling to 2-4 on the season. They'll hope to get back to their winning ways against the Eagles in Week 8. It will be on Bowen to put together a solid game plan to limit Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and others.

No mental mistakes will be tolerated, as the Giants are going to have to play close to perfect football to take down their NFC East rivals in this one.
