The New York Giants have put themselves in a very desperate situation, as they are now left to wait on either Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson to decide if they want to link up with Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll in the 2025 season (and possibly beyond).
With the tea leaves hinting at Rodgers possibly joining Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers, it seems like Wilson may end up coming to New York as a result of this move. However, a new team looking for a bridge quarterback has entered the fray, and it could lead to a bidding war between two lousy teams.
The Cleveland Browns, who are widely expected to bring in a new starting quarterback in free agency in addition to considering their options in the 2025 NFL Draft, will host the former Steelers quarterback for a visit, per Ian Rapoport. The Giants need to be all in on signing him immediately, as their quarterback options are starting to dwindle.
Giants must lock up Russell Wilson amid Browns interest
With the Browns led by a sharp offensive coach in Kevin Stefanski and in possession of a much better roster from the top down, the Giants may watch one of their top options bolt in free agency, leaving them at the altar with the least-desirable option once again.
While Wilson is by no means as good as he was with the Seahawks, last year with the Steelers proved that he can still be a solid starting quarterback with one of the best deep balls in the league. On a team with Malik Nabers, that could have some genuine appeal for Brian Daboll and the offense.
However, Wilson and the Steelers ran out of gas towards the end of the season, and the Giants will need to weigh how much of that was due to Wilson showing his age and how much was a poor roster incapable of winning big games. If both the Giants and the Browns believe he can be a solid starter, this free agent chase could get messy.
A tooth-and-nail fight for a 37-year-old free agent quarterback is not where most GMs want to be, but Joe Schoen will have no one to blame but himself if the Giants go down this route.
