The New York Giants are currently in sole possession of the worst record in the NFL, as their 2-12 season has featured nine straight losses, the release of Daniel Jones, and fans flying planes over the stadium to advocate for the firings of head coach Brian Daboll and GM Joe Schoen. Things are grim, no doubt.
Things went from bad to worse as the Giants were absolutely flattened by Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens. After Drew Lock was demoted to third-string quarterback on account of his injuries and Tommy DeVito suffered a concussion, Tim Boyle needed to suit up and play quarterback.
Boyle's infamy has been well-known among NFL fans at this point, as he has been a poor quarterback in both college and the pros. Boyle may need to play more meaningful snaps for the Giants in 2024, which is great news for those who want to see them earn the No. 1 overall pick.
Boyle, who went 12-24 for 123 yards with a touchdown and interception in this game, has now helped lead his teams to an 0-11 record in games where he attempted a pass. With Boyle in the driver's seat, the Giants have the best odds at securing the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Tim Boyle stat shows he can lead Giants to No. 1 overall pick
Boyle's NFL career is a mystery. At UConn in college, he threw just one touchdown against a staggering 13 interceptions. After transferring to FCS Eastern Kentucky, Boyle had more interceptions (13) than touchdown passes (11) again while going 4-7. Somehow, in a way that defies all logic, he got a training camp tryout with the Packers.
Boyle's NFL career has often been jokingly derided as the benefits of being buddies with Aaron Rodgers, but something else is at play here. Boyle, who has thrown just five touchdown passes on 233 attempts to go with 13 picks in the pros, has now played for seven NFL teams (Packers, Lions, Bears, Jets, Texans, Dolphins, Giants). What is the appeal?
Perhaps his appeal is losing on purpose. With DeVito and Drew Lock both dealing with injuries, losing would give the Giants a better chance at securing the No. 1 overall pick in a weak quarterback class dominated by Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders.
The Giants have nothing left to play for this year. If the future is all about securing the highest pick possible, starting whatever the opposite of a lucky charm is in Boyle seems like the way to go.
