New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen spoke to reporters at his annual pre-draft press conference to discuss the organization's current state. Naturally, he started by addressing the Dexter Lawrence-sized elephant in the room and acknowledging the star defensive tackle's uncertain status.
Most executives would be losing sleep over receiving a trade request from their best player. However, given the circumstances, Schoen seemed more optimistic than expected at the start of the recent press conference, which feels like great news for Giants fans. He, head coach John Harbaugh and senior vice president of football operations and strategy Dawn Aponte have apparently had "productive" dialogue with Lawrence's agents.
"We've had good conversations with his representatives throughout the last five or six days," Schoen stated. "Coach [Harbaugh], Dawn [Aponte], myself, we've all been in communication, trying to find some resolution."
Joe Schoen sparks optimism among Giants fans with encouraging Dexter Lawrence update
Schoen's latest comments are a stark contrast from the doom-and-gloom vibes that consumed Big Blue Nation not long ago. Many were quick to hit the panic button as soon as Lawrence asked out of New York. Nevertheless, the signs continue to point toward the latter's demand being more about a desire for a raise than a change of scenery.
By the sound of it, the Giants are doing their due diligence and leaving the door open for any possibility amid the standoff with Lawrence. Schoen admitted he's "always going to pick up the phone." Yet, if New York's brass has its druthers, cooler heads will eventually prevail.
"I'll echo what coach said last week: We'd like for Dexter [Lawrence] to be here, and at some point, we'll come to a resolution here, whatever that may be," Schoen added. " ... we'll see what happens here down the road."
While Lawrence saw a considerable dip in box score production in 2025, his impact goes far beyond the stat sheet. He's established himself as football's most dominant and imposing interior lineman over the years, which the numbers bear out. Schoen appears to recognize that the Giants can ill afford to lose their one-man wrecking crew.
Lawrence elevates everyone around him with his mere presence. The two-time All-Pro has been double-teamed at the highest rate for any defensive tackle since 2024, which has a massive trickle-down effect. He single-handedly creates exploitable one-on-one matchups for others, as evidenced by Giants standout pass rusher Brian Burns recording a career-high 16.5 sacks in 2025.
