It was another bad loss for the New York Giants on Sunday, this time at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens. Big Blue was dismantled by Lamar Jackson and the Ravens’ offense, losing 35-14. The Giants have now tied their franchise record for most consecutive losses, having dropped nine straight, including eight at home.
Their offense was once again woeful, scoring just 14 points. Yet another injury at the quarterback position resulted in longtime backup Tim Boyle stepping in after Tommy DeVito left with a concussion. Boyle may just end up playing the rest of the season.
At 2-12, New York is just looking to put this miserable season to bed and hope for better fortunes in 2025. But after back-to-back double-digit loss seasons following a playoff appearance just two years ago, this notable comment made by the Giants’ owner is backfiring horribly.
John Mara's 'We're back' comment after 2022 playoff win has backfired
The Giants shocked the NFL in 2022 when they made the playoffs for the first time in five years and even won a playoff game convincingly against the Minnesota Vikings, 31-24. Everyone thought for sure that the Giants were finally back from the dead—especially owner John Mara, who most notably said after the playoff win, “We’re back.” Since then, however, everything has gone south for the G-Men.
Since that bold statement by Mara, the Giants have gone a woeful 8-24, including a disappointing 6-11 finish last year. With New York on pace to lose their final 12 straight games of the regular season this year—a franchise-worst—it’s clear how much this team has declined.
It’s hard to believe how far the Giants have fallen. Mara’s statement from almost two years ago is laughable at this point. The offense looks worse and worse each week, the defense is riddled with injuries, and their two best players on both sides of the ball are having career years with new teams after Joe Schoen and Co. refused to pay them.
At this rate, it’s hard to imagine the Giants becoming contenders again anytime soon.
Giants fans are fed up. It’s become a common occurrence for planes with banners telling Mara to fire everyone to fly over MetLife Stadium. The team’s incompetence has reached an all-time high.
The Giants’ downward spiral since Mara’s infamous “We’re back” proclamation is the ultimate cautionary tale about premature celebration in the NFL. In just two years, this team has gone from playoff darlings to one of the league’s biggest embarrassments, with no clear end in sight.
Fans have every right to be frustrated—empty promises and disastrous decision-making have left this once-proud franchise in complete disarray. Until Mara and the front office make sweeping changes and prove they can build a sustainable winner, the only thing the Giants are “back” to is being the laughingstock of the league.
