It was revealed that Malik Nabers had been battling a lingering toe injury during his record-setting rookie season. It honestly made his bonkers stats even more mind-blowing. But it also cast some concern that this injury might be a bigger deal than New York Giants fans were led to believe.
When Nabers missed minicamp, it was, “Don’t panic.” When Nabers missed OTAs, it was, “Don’t panic.” Then a photo surfaced of the star receiver with other Giants pass catchers in Atlanta, and the Earth nearly shook from the collective sigh of relief from New York and New Jersey. No panic, indeed. But after a minor training camp scare, the bad thoughts are working their way back into fans’ heads.
Nabers hasn’t practiced with the team since August 6, and while that was only a week ago, a lot has happened since. That practice he left with trainers, never came back, then told the media it was part of his recovery plan and that he’s fine. Well, in another terrifying development, the Giants and Jets square off in a joint practice on Tuesday, and guess who won’t be in attendance for this one, either?
Giants’ silence on Malik Nabers only fuels growing injury concerns
Per Giants beat writer Pat Leonard, the 22-year-old up-and-coming superstar will be held out of practice again. Head coach Brian Daboll did an excellent job providing no additional context, other than saying he’s a no-go. Reporters asked if Nabers would require additional tests, to which Dabs zipped his lips and threw away the key.
#Giants head coach Brian Daboll says Malik Nabers is NOT practicing again today vs the #Jets. Won’t answer whether Nabers requires additional tests on the toe at this point. It’s still only August, but things are starting to feel... iffy. There was no need for the receiver to play in their first preseason game against the Bills, so it made sense to sit him out. But if he were healthy and good to go, there’s no doubt he’d be out on the field, battling it out against Sauce Gardner and the J-E-T-S.
If there really is nothing to panic about, then amazing. They need him. Putting the ball in Nabers’ hands was essentially the entire offensive scheme last year, and they can’t rely on that strategy again. It’s just too much for one guy to shoulder. That said, if this team is going to do anything moderately sneaky, he's gotta be healthy and ready to roll.
It’s another day and another round of Malik Nabers injury speculation. For all this don’t panic talk, it sure seems like fans should at least start prepping for some panic. Daboll and company have been shoving irritating no-info updates down our throats all offseason, and while they aren’t obligated to disclose any information regarding his injury, it’s not looking great.
Until Nabers is back on the field, every non-informative update is going to feel a little harder to ignore.
