The start of training camp brings hope and excitement around the NFL, but the Carolina Panthers experienced the unfortunate downside of putting the pads on this week. A brutal knee injury to second-year edge defender Nic Scourton has sparked questions about who Carolina could look to add via free agency or trade.
New York Giants defender Kayvon Thibodeaux has already been named as a potential replacement. Heading into the fifth and final year of his rookie deal, Thibodeaux has been the subject of constant trade rumors this offseason.
Joe Schoen and the Giants have been unwavering (publicly, at least) in their determination to keep the former top-five draft pick. As needy as the Panthers may be, Big Blue can't afford to budge now.

Scourton went down during the first practice of training camp, getting carted off the field and inciting panic in Carolina. The injury was later confirmed to be a torn ACL, meaning the second-year defender will miss significant time. He has not yet been officially ruled out for the entirety of the 2026 season, but he won't be back on the field any time soon.
The Giants now have an obvious opportunity to trade Thibodeaux. In their quest to make the playoffs for the second consecutive season, the Panthers may be desperate to add another quality edge defender, especially one who can defend both the run and the pass. They're currently set to rely on Patrick Jones II and Princely Umanmielen to fill in, and both players have holes in their games.
Zach Roberts of Carolina Panthers On SI named Thibodeaux a top option to replace Scourton. He said, "Bringing him in for one year allows him to reset his value and help the Panthers. And if the Panthers want to keep him, you can never have too many edges."
Trading Thibodeaux has never made sense for the Giants, barring an aggressive overpay. Without him, New York would have no depth on the edge, forcing an early positional switch from rookie Arvell Reese.
Another team's desperation doesn't change the situation. Unless the Panthers are willing to shell out a second-round pick for Thibodeaux, which they likely won't, the G-Men are better off holding onto the talented edge defender.
The trade market can be revisited at the deadline, especially if the Giants fail to push for a playoff spot. For now, it's best to stand pat.
