The New York Giants lost the Trent McDuffie trade sweepstakes to the Los Angeles Rams, but much like stepping outside in February, they're not really sweating it.
Would it have been nice to swing a trade for the 25-year-old two-time Super Bowl-winning cornerback? Sure. However, blowing through their already thin draft asset pool to then re-sign him for $30 million per year over the next four years or whatever deal he's about to sign is not so nice.
That's why it's really not that big of a deal that nothing ended up happening, and there's a good chance Big Blue's involvement in the talks was overblown to begin with. Still, regardless of how badly they may or may not have wanted McDuffie, it looks like they've already set their sights on a much easier corner to acquire in free agency.
SNY's Connor Hughes reported that the G-Men have been sniffing around the Jamel Dean market, with the 2019 third-round pick being someone John Harbaugh and Co. are high on:
While the #Giants made calls on Trent McDuffie, I do not get the sense, per sources, they were as heavily involved as perceived. They were never going as high as the #Rams.

This does not mean New York isn't targeting CBs in free agency, though. Jamel Dean is someone I've heard…
Giants waste no time eyeing Jamel Dean after Trent McDuffie deal falls through
Cornerback was already going to be a priority for the Giants this offseason. Cor’Dale Flott is heading toward free agency, Deonte Banks was borderline unplayable last season, Paulson Adebo didn't look like an $18 million corner, and the depth behind them leaves a lot to be desired. Even if Flott ends up back in East Rutherford, the position still needs help.
That’s where Dean makes a lot of sense. He’s been a steady presence in Tampa Bay for years and plays the kind of physical outside corner that Harbaugh has always liked to bring on board.
The one thing the Giants will have to weigh heavily is durability. Dean has never made it through a full season, which is going to give teams pause once free agency opens. The flip side is that it could keep his price from getting completely out of hand, which matters for a Giants team that still has a lot of holes to address and not much cap space to do it.
And that’s really the whole point of this sudden pivot.
Missing out on McDuffie would have meant giving up premium draft capital and handing out a massive new contract. If the G-Men can land someone like Dean without emptying the cupboard to do it, the end result might look pretty smart in a few months.
Sometimes the best move isn’t winning the bidding war. Sometimes it’s stepping aside, letting the universe take control, and moving on to the next one.
