Not long ago, many rumor mills shared the sentiment that the New York Giants would select Shedeur Sanders out of Colorado with the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. After all, it made a lot of sense.
The G-Men need a quarterback, and the two parties have been linked together for quite some time. It was the worst-kept secret in the NFL that general manager Joe Schoen was head over heels with the Colorado star quarterback. However, that's the funny thing about rumors. You never can truly tell if what's being spread is true or not.
Fast forward to today, and Big Blue is seemingly in every QB conversation throughout the league. Matthew Stafford, Aaron Rodgers, Justin Fields, Sam Darnold, Russell Wilson, Cam Ward, Jaxson Dart, and Sanders have all been mentioned as the possible next signal caller for the Giants. Like we said, they are seemingly in every QB conversation that's been had.
What if the Giants already have a quarterback plan? What if the Giants already know who they’re targeting and it won’t even cost them the No. 3 pick? That would be a shocking twist, right?
NFL Combine rumors suggest the Giants will be selecting Travis Hunter in the 2025 Draft
In a relatively surprising turn of events, the rumor winds have changed direction and found themselves blowing in the direction of Sanders' Colorado teammate, Travis Hunter. Hayden Winks of Underdog Fantasy has confirmed he's been hearing as such:
Growing consensus out of the combine:
— Hayden Winks (@HaydenWinks) February 25, 2025
1. Titans - EDGE Abdul Carter
2. Browns - QB Cam Ward
3. Giants - CB/WR Travis Hunter
This rumor comes right after ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. projected the QB-needy Giants to take Hunter at No. 3, citing the lack of a true franchise quarterback in this class. The only logical QBs would be either Miami's Ward or Colorado's Sanders. However, Kiper Jr. doesn't believe Schoen will use such precious draft capital on a non-generational talent. He states:
"First, there are mixed feelings on him [Sanders] around the league, and he isn't seen as a surefire top-five pick. The front office and coaching staff have to win right now, and banking their futures on the class's QB2 might not get it done. Second, I'm not ready to close the door on the Giants bypassing this lackluster QB class in favor of a veteran option. There are options here, and if the Giants go another route, they can instead use this pick to address one of many other needs. Or, in Hunter's case, maybe two of them.
Hunter is my top-ranked prospect in the class, and though I currently see him as a receiver in the pros, he could also play cornerback for New York. Perhaps the Giants take his ball skills and quickness and drop him at receiver opposite Malik Nabers to form a solid supporting cast around whomever is under center. Perhaps they look at his elite instincts and finally land a true CB1. Either way, this pick would be clutch for a struggling Giants team."
Drafting a generational player who can play two positions is infinitely more valuable than an uninspiring quarterback. The idea of Hunter playing both sides of the ball is beyond exciting—it’s a rare opportunity that could transform the Giants' roster.
If Hunter is available, and if Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll believe he's the best talent in the draft, then they have to select him. There are no ifs, ands, or buts. The potential for missing on a quarterback at No. 3 is just too risky, especially when there is a once-in-a-lifetime playmaker on the board ready to contribute to two major areas of need.
Drafting for need has burned the Giants before, and it will again if they aren’t careful. This time, they need to get it right. This is a team that is 9-25, coming off the worst season in franchise history, looking to get itself out of this endless hole of despair. Drafting the best player available will help them get their footing.
It feels like if Hunter is on the board, the Giants won't pass up the opportunity to draft him. Passing on a quarterback is risky. But passing on a game-changer like Hunter? That might be even worse.
