Giants flirting with QB shake-up that could blow up what they just fixed

Stick to the plan.

It didn’t take long for Jameis Winston to feel like one of the most refreshing personalities in the New York Giants locker room. He may not be the future of the Giants, but his presence in it right now feels like the kind of energy this team needs.

He’s experienced, competitive, and fully leaning into what the G-Men are trying to build. Which is why Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton suggesting the team’s next offseason move should be to trade him away feels more off-key than insightful.

Yes, the quarterback room is crowded. Yes, Winston is sandwiched between a former Super Bowl winner and a first-round rookie. But that doesn’t mean his spot is meaningless. The Giants finally have a group with structure. There’s a dynamic in place. And rushing to tinker with it because the depth chart looks slightly full in May would be forcing a problem that doesn’t exactly exist.

Moton breaks it down: "Head coach Brian Daboll has tabbed Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback. Big Blue traded back into the first round for Jaxson Dart. Winston is in no-man’s land between the team’s current and potential future starting quarterbacks. The Giants should try to trade him for an early Day 3 draft pick. Winston has some value as a backup. Last year, he threw for 2,121 yards, 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 12 games (seven starts) with the Cleveland Browns.”

That’s technically correct. But it’s missing what makes Winston’s role so important. He’s already connected with the locker room. He’s coined the kind of slogan that actually resonates: “More giggles, more laughter, more fun.” That's the kind of pulse this franchise has been searching for after a joyless 3-14 season. Winston hasn’t just filled a seat — he’s shaped the energy.

Stability in the QB room matters more than flipping a Day 3 pick

There’s also the matter of who would actually step into his shoes. Russell Wilson is the starter, and Jaxson Dart isn’t expected to be game-ready until later this season. Tommy DeVito is a fun story, but he’s the guy you turn to only if things unravel. If Wilson falters early or misses time, it’s Winston who immediately gives the Giants the best shot to stay afloat.

Even Dart has gone out of his way to praise Winston’s work ethic. That kind of influence has real weight, especially for a rookie trying to grow behind the scenes. And that mentorship doesn’t work the same if it gets shipped off for a late-round draft pick in the middle of OTAs.

There’s nothing wrong with keeping all four quarterbacks for now. That number will naturally change as the season gets closer. But moving Winston now — before a single preseason snap — would send the wrong message about how much this team values continuity and leadership. For the first time in a long time, there’s a plan. Ripping a piece out of it before it even gets off the ground wouldn’t be forward-thinking. It would be careless.
