As if the planes flying over MetLife Stadium with banners begging John Mara to fix the team over the last two weeks weren't an all-time low for the New York Giants organization, people are calling for the front office to clean the house after the team's embarrassing loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
The Giants failed to replicate their victory over the Ravens from just two seasons ago, as Lamar Jackson threw for 290 yards and five touchdowns. While Baltimore was successful on the ground, they were even more impressive through the air, as wideout Rashod Bateman had three receptions for 80 yards and two touchdowns.
The Ravens would win 35-14, resulting in New York's ninth consecutive loss and eighth loss at home.
While injuries have decimated the Giants' roster, their performance this year has made them one of the worst teams in the league and has put them in a position to obtain the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Giants fans have seen enough and are calling for a change in what was supposed to be a special season honoring the franchise’s 100th year. The loss to the Ravens could be the final straw that breaks the camel’s back and may be enough for Mara to move on from head coach Brian Daboll following this season.
The Giants have already cut ties with Daniel Jones and will rebuild their offense from scratch next season alongside rookie sensation Malik Nabers.
If Mara and the Giants organization decide to go in a different direction, why not consider Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as a candidate to replace Daboll? Chris Landers from FanSided certainly thinks so.
Could Ben Johnson be the NY Giants' next head coach?
While Johnson may want to avoid exposing himself to the heavy scrutiny of the New York media, this will be one of the most appealing markets with head coaching openings this offseason, and he would be an excellent fit for the Giants.
Johnson was mentioned as a head coach candidate for several teams last offseason. After the Lions' offensive success again this year, we expect several teams to express interest in Detroit's offensive coordinator again. The Lions' offense is near the league's top for the second consecutive season.
Johnson turned down an opportunity with the Washington Commanders last offseason. He returned to the Lions before this season, so the question remains whether he would pursue an NFC East team or if he was just not attracted to the Washington job.
The Chicago Bears could also show interest in Johnson. After firing Matt Eberflus, the team will be in the market for a new head coach next season, and the move would be close to Johnson and his family.
With the Giants likely drafting a new franchise quarterback, it will be crucial New York gets Johnson in the door as soon as possible to help develop whichever prospect the team brings in. Johnson's creativity and playcalling will go hand in hand with a young quarterback.
We can expect Johnson to be selective in the hiring process, so it will take some convincing from Mara and the Giants organization to leave Detroit. However, moving on from Daboll may be the first step to help Big Blue regain their winning ways and get back to the playoffs.
