The New York Giants are in the thick of another head coaching search, but this one has frustrated Giants fans more than usual. Right now, it's unclear what Joe Schoen and John Mara's vision is, especially since there are several top head coaching candidates the team needs to consider hiring.
The age-old debate within the fanbase has been whether the Giants should hire John Harbaugh or Kevin Stefanski to be the franchise's next head coach. It seems like they're the top two candidates for the job, but while many fans want them to hire Harbaugh, Giants' legend Tiki Barber prefers Stefanski.
While discussing the opening on WFAN Sports Radio, Barber admitted he sees Stefanski as a better fit for the Giants, who should be considering offensive-minded coaches to continue the development of Jaxson Dart, but also believes the 43-year-old is more suited to assemble a strong coaching staff.
"There's just something I like about Kevin Stefanski when it comes to developing Jaxson Dart and continuing to build a staff that is going to get great defensive production."Tiki Barber
Tiki Barber thinks the Giants should hire Kevin Stefanski over John Harbaugh
Even though Harbaugh has a Lombardi Trophy on his mantle, Barber pointed to the two-time Coach of the Year's track record with some inferior rosters in Cleveland to back up his qualifications. He led a team quarterbacked by an aging Joe Flacco to an 11-win season in 2023, which is wildly impressive.
The last two seasons have been rough in Cleveland, but the nightmare Deshaun Watson trade set the franchise back years. They had some talent this season, but they haven't been able to figure out the QB woes since moving on from Baker Mayfield, which forced ownership to move on from Stefanski.
Even though he is an offensive mind, the three-time Pro Bowler also gave Stefanski props for assembling a strong defensive coaching staff that has Browns' defense among the best in football. And it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that Big Blue's defense has the talent to do the same.
Cleveland boasts both the Defensive Player of the Year in Myles Garrett and likely Defensive Rookie in the Year in Carson Schwesinger on their roster, which is no small feat. The Giants' defense should have been better with Brian Burns and Abdul Carter, so hopefully Stefanski brings over Jim Schwartz.
Shedeur Sanders showed promise under Stefanski's tutelage, so there's no telling what Dart could accomplish in a better situation. Frankly, Barber makes a great point, but between these two, I don't think there's a way for ownership to mess this up unless they go in a completely different direction.
