It is officially draft week. The 2025 NFL Draft is just days away, and for a 'lackluster class,' it sure is shaping up to be one of the most exciting. But that's the nature of the draft. It's hard not to get excited about the next wave of players who have the potential to change everything.
While fans expect fireworks on draft night, no one team could bring a better show than the New York Giants. The No. 3 overall pick has been a source of contention among analysts, fans, and gurus alike. Think you know what the G-Men are planning on doing with the pick? It's fair to speculate, but they have played their cards close to the vest—exactly how Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll typically operate.
There’s a growing belief Big Blue is split between three prospects, all talented individuals who bring something different to the Giants. There's Colorado's Travis Hunter (cornerback/wide receiver), Penn State's Abdul Carter (edge rusher), and Colorado's other, more polarizing prospect, Shedeur Sanders (quarterback). Each brings their own specific skillset. Each could become a cornerstone for the next decade in New York.
A majority believe the Giants' biggest roster hole is at quarterback, even after signing Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson—there's still no long-term solution. That’s where Sanders enters the conversation—and no team has spent more time trying to figure him out than the Giants.
New York Giants have done more homework on Shedeur Sanders than any other team with any other prospect
According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, for one reason or another, the Giants have been all over the Sanders coverage. Pelissero explained:
"Shedeur Sanders and the Giants have been linked, literally, for like a year. The Giants had somebody—a scout, or Joe Schoen—at every open practice, at every game of Shedeur Sanders', they brought him out to New Jersey for a visit, they went to his showcase, now they do a private workout... there's no team that has done more work on one player in this draft than the Giants on Shedeur Sanders."
If that level of attention tells us anything, it’s that Sanders is firmly on the table at No. 3. But whether that’s the right move—or just smoke—is the question hanging over draft night.
The Sanders homework appears to be two-pronged. On one hand, Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll may be doing everything possible to confirm what they already believe—that Sanders is their guy, and drafting him at No. 3 would be a decision made with full conviction. On the other, all this exhaustive scouting could be about the opposite: giving themselves permission to pass. They may be gathering as much information as possible not to justify the pick, but to walk away from it confidently, knowing Carter or Hunter would be the better move if either falls to them.
Why else would this team spend so much time on one prospect? What haven't they seen already?
After seemingly sending every front-office employee to Boulder for Colorado's Pro Day, they still requested a private workout just over a week out from the draft. It's interesting for sure. If it were mind games, they'd be playing quite the long game...
Both Schoen's and Daboll's jobs are on the line. They come into the season with some of the hottest buns in the league. As Pelissero said, "There's no team that has done more work on one player in this draft than the Giants on Shedeur Sanders." Come Thursday night Giants fans will finally get the answers they've been looking for. Until then, it’s all just speculation—and the Giants seem to be perfectly fine keeping it that way.
